Bruwer Raats has a great reputation for making Cabernet Franc. But together with his cousin Gavin Bruwer, he also ventured into making Pinotage under the banner of B Vintners. This is a classic cross from South Africa, formerly maligned but now making delicious wines. By harvesting the grapes perfectly ripe, in this case beautiful smooth wine is made, with the accent on its fruit. Moreover, the sticks are in the cool Stellenbosch, which gives the wine an extra freshness. The grapes are harvested from old vines, planted on the classic Stellenbosch soil, consisting of weathered granite, a short distance from the ocean, and also higher up the hill, where it is just a bit cooler. The grapes are picked when they are nicely ripe, but also still very fresh. Then follows a gentle extraction, with a very subtle use of oak. Everything has to be right. With this Pinotage, the accent is on elegance, freshness and finesse, without losing concentration and losing storage potential. A delicious modern Pinotage.
