When Jean-Claude (JC) and Carolyn Martin took up the challenge in 2002 to start a winery in a remote corner of the Walker Bay Wine Region, it was quite exciting. Never before had vines been planted here, but JC and Carolyn - both descendants of well-known wine families - were determined and convinced of the area's potential. Together they founded Creation Estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Five years later, in 2007, the first harvest took place and they equipped the cellar with the best equipment from Germany, France and Switzerland. They have been working hard ever since. Not only with their quality wines, the tasting room has also made a name for itself.

Today, Creation Estate has 50 hectares of vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. JC and Carolyn's philosophy for making wine is based on “enhancing the beauty of nature”. It is primarily about the quality of the grapes, not about the tricks that can be performed in the cellar. “Making wine is a delicate art that must be reticent to capture the nuances of its origin,” says JC Martin. The terroir is important at Creation Estate. Not surprising, because the combination of higher situated vineyards and the proximity to the Atlantic Ocean creates a unique microclimate in Walker Bay. In addition, JC Martin works with wild yeast cells instead of commercially developed ones, read more about this on our news page.

In 2019, the municipality of Overstrand Hermanus in South Africa was awarded by UNESCO with the status "Creative City status for Gastronomy"! This is one of only 10 cities worldwide and the first in the African continent to receive this award. For Creation winery, and many other local individuals and boutique producers, this is a tribute to their contribution to achieving sustainable development goals.

One of our favourites is Creation Wines, situated along the magnificent Hemel & Aarde route in the Western Cape. The proximity to Hermanus makes for a great area to spend some time! Spend a morning watching whales during a boat cruise or a walk on the cliff path along the coast, followed by a lunch paired with a wine tasting at Creation. This is an unforgettable experience which you will never forget! One of our favourite restaurants in Hermanus is Harbour Rock in the New Harbour, they serve amazing sea food and have a great view over the ocean! For the wine lovers, Hermanus is a great place to spend a few days and can easily be combined with a visit to the nearby Cape winelands and of course Cape Town!
